Context Window
A context window is the maximum number of tokens (words, code characters, and symbols) that an AI model can process in a single interaction. It defines the upper limit of how much information—including your prompt, code, and the model's response—the AI can hold in memory at once.
Why context windows matter for coding
When using AI for coding, the context window determines how much of your codebase the model can "see" at once. A small context window means the AI can only process a few files at a time, leading to suggestions that miss dependencies or break integrations. Larger context windows allow the AI to understand your project holistically—reading architecture, tests, and related modules before making changes.
Context window sizes in 2026
- +Claude (Anthropic): 200K tokens—enough for most entire codebases
- +GPT-4o (OpenAI): 128K tokens
- +Gemini 2.5 (Google): 1M tokens
- +Typical code file: 500-2,000 tokens per file
Token count is not the same as character count. In code, a single token is roughly 3-4 characters. A 200K-token context window can hold approximately 150,000 lines of code—enough for most projects. However, using the full context window increases cost and latency, so AI tools use strategies like selective file reading to stay efficient.
Claude Code manages context automatically. It reads files on-demand rather than loading your entire codebase upfront, keeping token usage efficient while maintaining project-wide awareness through strategic file access.
